Colostomy Support Wear Is One of My Best Friends Today

This post may contain affiliate links. These will take you to products that I have found most helpful to my ostomy lifestyle. This helps us be able to keep our site in operation by helping with our operating expenses.

Colostomy Support Wear Is a Necessity Now

Colostomy Support WearWhen you have had either a colostomy, or an ileostomy, you are now dealing with a stoma.

In dealing with a stoma or an ostomy you are going to be using a set of appliance pieces that you will be using daily.

They are the wafer and the pouch, sometimes I call them the flange and the bag.

I soon figured out that my friend with the attachments was going to hinder my body movements.

Maybe not all body movements actually, but I was going to feel unsure of myself with the new situations.

Being able to move around, to do all types of things that used to be normal, now take on a different tone. There is now a more serious approach to things.

New Thought On Movement

Here is a list of body movements that now count as needing a better approach to them, than you paid attention to (something that you did naturally, without a thought) before your surgery.

  • Bending over will be different for you. You will now have a sack hanging down off of your lower abdomen area.
  • Sleeping on your side you have a bag in your way. It too can hang down with the base being at the angle you are laying at.
  • Sitting down, you will have the end of the bag sticking into your groin area, this is if you use a drain able pouch.
  • If you want to go running, you will have a bag against your skin, causing you to be warmer than normal.
  • Laying on your stomach is not possible any more
  • You are only able to bend so far over with it squashing your appliances

Some Images of My Colostomy & How It Wears

This first set of images in your mind is what it will look like without colostomy support wear. I can tell you from experience that if you have worn colostomy support garments

Bulging Ostomy Bag
Protect Your Against a Bulging Ostomy Bag

and then you will go even a few hours without them, you will notice a very large difference.

So I guess it’s more about what it feels like to you than what it looks like.

You will no longer be able to make sudden moves physical, without your mine helping you to remember to be more cautious of what the consequences may be if you tear your device up, or the wafer comes unattached, or the pouch rips off or be aware of what just a small bit cracked (unsnapped) will allow to happen.

How Colostomy Support Garments Can Help-My List of What You Need to Be Wary Of

My List:

  • Sudden movements may cause problems
  • Excessive heat or moisture may cause adhesives to no longer work
  • Excessive gases being emitted
  • Excessive bowel movement over a short period of time

All of these could be large problems for you. I know that I became more cautious because I don’t want to deal with the circumstances surrounding any of the sort occurring.

Also as I have stated earlier many of these things become large in your mind. You will not forget. They say that you can go back to normal. Yes normal in many ways, but in some other ways, it isn’t normal any more.

Once you see what the problems could be, you now are saying to yourself, Yes I see that, but what can I do to help improve, or minimize any of these things?

So I asked myself how can I make this more normal.

Normalizing Things

Here are a couple of great examples of the variety of support products that are there for you. With an Ostomy many different companies have recognized the needs of all of us.

While the needs may be varied a bit, we still all have the same basic things that need to be taken care of for us to feel more competent about our presence and our activities.

The first product is a stoma guard. While I personally don’t find a need I can certainly relate to having a desire for the Stoma Dome Guard. It is always very easy to hit your stoma when you are being physically active.

The second product is something that is similar to the underwear I wear now. It is called the OstomyPockets White-Snap pocket onto underwear/undergarment.

This is something that will snap into place wherever your stoma is located on your abdomen area. It is very flexible and serves the main purpose of holding the ostomy pouch in place so that it isn’t moving.

It isn’t digging into your groin area either. It is held in place. That’s a blessing of it’s own.

The third product is the StomaTuck Ostomy Pouch. This will be handy for the very physically active athlete, If you do physical work for a living this will be very handy.

The movements aren’t limited as they are in product one. the Stoma Dome is great for activity but not to the extent of this type of physical movements. the stoma dome is more for dancing, lifting things, moving things, etc.

They’re great options that offer flexibility for you.

An Overview Of Ostomy Support Wear

As you can see by my suggestions there aren’t any big home runs to be hit. It (the Answers You Need) will be figured out from what determine to be things you simply need to make things better for you.

Many solutions to many of these areas of concern are answered by wearing colostomy support wear. Many different options are available to you.

Products such as support belts, ostomy support underwear, ostomy support panties, colostomy support wraps as well.

Let’s dig in and talk about these colostomy support wear. At the beginning of the page is a picture of my two main items.

What I was told about when we asked about any support being available was these type of colostomy wear garments that are in the market to help ostomy patients.

The main thing they provide are support for your pouch, so that if it fills up, or breaks away, or leaks, then some of the damage is held in the support pocket of the wrap or the underwear.

This has happened to me, it was a help, but truthfully it still was a controlled mess to deal with.

The largest thing these do for me are they give me, peace of mind. I feel much better knowing the my pouch is housed in a support area that while it does bulge out, is still pulled in closer to me and is not swinging freely around.

A full pouch can be rather heavy and you will not want to have it literally unsnap from the wafer because of the weight.

While I am sleep I know that things are much safer by the wrap pulling the appliances nicely to my body while I sleep. Many nights I have awaken with the bag bulging, but nothing bad had happened because the ostomy support wrap did it’s job.

I have found the wrap and the colostomy support underwear to be extremely valuable to me.

Lower On The Groin Area, Ouch!

Another big irritant to me, as a male is that my drain able pouch is low enough into my groin area that the folded end actually will be hitting and rubbing up against my groin enough that it feels like it is poking me down there. Very uncomfortable.

So an ostomy support belt, or colostomy support underwear do a very nice job for me when placing the end of the pouch into the protection pouch are of the body briefs, so that the hard plastic is not irritating or poking me down there.

Take the Steps Today to Prepare an Ostomy Emergency Travel Kit

My Personal Ostomy Travel Bag

Now that you have an ostomy, you must be prepared for all of the emergencies that come with it. I was told that I should carry a bag or case with extra ostomy supplies in it.

I needed to have it with me at all times. It consists of the appliances(wafers & ostomy bags), the cleaning wipes, the Hefty baggies, a disposable waste bag, and some air freshener.

These are the items that I keep in my bag in my car.

The ostomy appliances, the ostomy foldable bag, plus the appliance wafer will both end up having problems when sitting in the elements in your car for a considerable amount of time.

You would not want to keep them in your car for nine months. Just the temperature changes will be enough to take the life from them. Yet not even counting on any dampness and especially direct sunlight.

One Very Important Note: you should always be rotating the supplies you keep in your car for freshness

From now go to use these and have doing their job because you know that the supplies in you kit are fresh because you have rotated for freshness.

Do I Need An Ostomy Emergency Bag

When someone recommended to me that I should put an stoma emergency bag together I was like, you have got to be kidding me.

I just wanna forget this thing exists. The problem is it does exist and not being prepared is not what I needed to deal with.

A couple of reasons why you need an emergency bag with you. My wife and I were traveling by automobile on a road trip. Our destination was 350 miles away.

Within 100 miles of leaving I was smelling what smelled like a large fart from someone. So I figured we had better make a rest stop.

Once I stopped the car, I got out, stood up, and took a peek at my appliance and sure enough I had a breakdown with my appliances.

So out comes the kit, and off I go to take care of the situation. Never pretty but I was prepared to handle what had happened.

However a couple of months earlier I was not as prepared as I needed to be. That became a big problem. A smelly clean up in a public restroom, where I was hoping someone else would not show up.

So it is your choice to be prepared or not to be prepared

What Do I Put In My Ostomy Emergency Kit?

You need to have at least one set of the appliance that you currently use. You will need to have one ostomy bag, and one matching wafer for it.

If this is new to you, maybe you should be carrying two of these to make sure you are covered for any situation.

emergency bag contents for my ostomy

The second thing that is very important is a set of paper towel sheets. I would recommend at least 10 sheets. Hopefully this will cover any clean up situation for you.

You probably should have some type of wet wipe to clean up with moisture the soiled area. These can actually be some type of wet wipe or moist sanitary towelettes of some sort. They will help to thoroughly clean off the skin area where the break out has occurred.

You will also need to have some skin prep cloths to use to help treat the skin around your stoma before you apply the new appliances. One critical thing is to have some bags to put your soiled waste items in for proper disposal.

A large zip-locked bag, would work nicely here, in unison with a bag trash bag for the storing of the appliances themselves.

As you may not always have a good place to dispose of the clean up items, so you may need to take the package with you.

I have had the experience of not having enough disposable storage with me and it was difficult to find a right place to throw all of it away.

Please do not forget a complete change of clothing may need to be with you. The smallest leakage may cause a soiling of all three pieces of your clothing if you are a man. If you are a woman it is probably very similar unless you are wearing some extra piece of clothing.

It is very easy to get your lower area of your shirt or your top, your underwear, as well as your trousers, or pants, or maybe you are wearing a pair of shorts or a skirt think about having replacements for them as well.

I have had to change at least three main items twice in my travels. It is embarrassing if you are not prepared.

Colostomy Clothing Was Immediately on My Mind

This post may contain affiliate links. These will take you to products that I have found most helpful to my ostomy lifestyle. This helps us be able to keep our site in operation by helping with our operating expenses.

Why Was Colostomy Clothing Such a Big Deal?

Colostomy Clothing Was Immediately on My MindAfter over 5 days in the hospital, colostomy clothing was big time on my mine. Why you ask?

For 5 days I was wearing a peek-a-boo backless gown, not very becoming on a 61 year old man, I might add. What to wear, I sound like a woman now, but I had a good reason for this concern.

As I walked around I realized that my outfits right now would be sweat pants and a t-shirt. The main reason would be my ostomy was placed just immediately below my waist on my left hand side. my left hand side probably because I am left-handed?

Maybe some other reason but I do not know why. With this larger bump, It made it impossible for me to button up any of my pants that I owned.

Regular Clothes Just Didn’t Work Well

I tried, and tried all of them. The only answer was the baggy britches look with no belt but wearing suspenders. Huh?, Ah, NOT MY LOOK. Some may agree with this look others may disagree. I wasn’t going to do that look.

So I faced giving all of my pants away, and replacing them with something that I could wear. But What? A few days later, the Ostomy care nurse that I had an appointment with told us to check with a gentlemen at a store in a local mall. He would be able to help.

Searching For Clothing for Colostomy Patients, Takes Patience

So we went to this kind sir and he directed us to a shirt rack and a pants rack for what recommended for people with my needs. Was this the answer, no not really.Ostomy Shirt and Slacks

We did start heading in the right direction though. We purchased one shirt and we were not sure the trousers were the answer so we continued on our search.

Our search led us a few days later to an outlet store where the stocked Wrangler elastic expansion waist banded pants. These allowed me to wear a dress casual type of trouser and yet do it without a belt. None of my belts have been worn ever since my surgery.

The Shirt Search Was Next

Our next search was for a shirt type that could be worn out, the untucked look that still looked dress but would hang loosely and nicely over the pants. You see the object is to be comfortable but not to show the obvious ostomy bump that is always present.

parastomal hernia

It is best when the bag is newly changed and at it’s worst when it is full of gases or feces. Then it’s time to find a restroom.

So the search was for a tail less shirt, that looked dressy and had some nice design to it, not just a very plain looking shirt. This was a challenge. Several stores visited and we left several stores were left disappointed.

Finally we found one store where I was able to find 5 different shirts that I could wear comfortably that checked off all of the boxes on the list of requirements.

The challenge is that these stores only carry a few different shirts of this style that fit me. We still haven’t found any other store but that one.

What Are You Looking For to Dress a Colostomy Patient

You will need a look that disguises the fact that you have an ostomy, with a piece of equipment attached to it.

Please be aware, as you are out of the house, that situations will arise when you bag will expand very much. the bulge that develops is rather large. It can be very embarrassing to you, if that bulge is very easily noticed.

Once you have either changed the bag or you have drained the bag, you are very happy to have a look in your clothing as a colostomy patient that covers this fact up for you.

Ostomy PantsThis is an area where I have had to realize that things aren’t as recognizable to most people.

But they are really uncomfortable to you knowing and wondering how many people are noticing.

With my lack in personal confidence, I wouldn’t be in public with my t-shirt and sweat pants look.

The ostomy to me is too apparent. I only do this if I am wearing a jacket over it, or a windbreaker over it.

Have You Prepared an Ostomate Emergency Bag?

Another thing to be aware of is that if you need to change the equipment you will need to be able to access the ostomy area easily.

Tight, restrictive clothing does not work well for changing or draining situations. Also I always take a change of clothing with me in case a breakout happens.

A breakout is if the bag is so full it starts unattaching itself and leakage is happening or if the wafer is leaking or becoming unattached. I have had both things happen, And It was very helpful having other clothes to change into.

So it is very important to have a colostomy emergency bag ready and easily reached in your car, if you are out for an extended period of time. I have a great post about this, Preparing An Ostomy Emergency Travel Kit. Being prepared is now more important than ever before.

Colostomy Maintenance My First Job

This post may contain affiliate links. These will take you to products that I have found most helpful to my ostomy lifestyle. This helps us be able to keep our site in operation by helping with our operating expenses.

Colostomy Maintenance A Really Big Deal!

Colostomy Maintenance My First JobWithin a couple of hours, the conversations from the nurses began about the care that was going to be needed for me to properly take care of my stoma or in other words colostomy maintenance.

I looked down and there it was. My new clinging buddy, my new partner for the rest of my life.

I was in the hospital following my surgery, it was a new world for me. The first thing I realized was I was all hooked up to many things. I was tired, and sleepy, but mostly I was very thankful, that I had survived. My son and  my wife were there for me.

Colostomy Care Questions

What did I know about caring for the ostomy? Great question, I really didn’t know much, nor had I really cared much about it before the operation. Now I had to know, as they told me good hygiene was essential. Proper care was needed daily and sometimes hourly.

Much as going to the bathroom is totally natural to an adult, this was not natural to me at all. In fact it was very uncomfortable, weird and different.

What world had I been thrown into? I had to listen up, and pay close attention now, the preservation of George was now at hand.

But really it was very important for me to learn how to care for myself from this point on.

What Colostomy Care Maintenance Instructions Do I Need to Share

When I was learning about my colostomy, one of the first things I learned was to make sure I changed the bag (the device) often enough.

What did that mean to me? They said to change it often enough to make sure there wasn’t any spillage ever.

In listening to them, it was more about maintaining cleanliness and a germ free environment. I heard stories about patients who didn’t do this correctly and would end up back in the hospital with infections. So okay, cleanliness is next to Godliness.

Keep it clean, change the apparatus when needed. You will know when you need to change your device I was told.

Sure enough I figured it out quickly. the next think was when changing make sure you clean up with sanitary skin wipes. Again keep it clean. Remove all residue from the stoma area.

Next being a hairy guy, I needed to shave all the way around it. Again, clean, slick, and hairless. A clean germ free area to cover with the floating wafer that holds the bag.

The last thing to mention is to make sure you treat the skin area around the stoma with a skin barrier prep. This will keep you from getting rashes and sores underneath the floating flange area.

The big thing here is that normal perspiring, and just having that skin area covered most of the time, makes it an area that can get itchy, or even pretty sore relatively easily.

The Colostomy Care Procedure What Is Involved

As I go through the procedure please realize that one size does not fit all. This is what I do. We are all different, all of us may have a different looking stoma, that varies in size.

Please use it as a guide for your information. I am sharing my experiences to maybe help you out.

Here goes!

  • Step 1. I prepare my apparatus before I begin the changing operation. The reasons why I do this are to make sure I do not get started and I am not prepared for all scenarios that could come up.

  • Step 2. What I use in the process. I prepare 5 sheets of paper towel, I get a new bag ready, I get a new wafer ready. I grab a skin prep to have ready. I also prepare my electric razor to use to trim up the area. Also I have one of the ostomy trash bags that come with the bags in the box ready to go, and I also have a plastic grocery bag as well.

colostomy care procedure

Ostomy care

  • Step 3. Next I will check to make sure the bag has been emptied, that I am not passing gas, nor am I passing feces. You do not want to be changing the equipment if any of these things are currently in process. If you have a green light then go to step 4.

  • Step 4. I start removing the bag and the floating flange attached together. I start at the top and proceed to pull off gently down. Gently works best because you are separating the well stuck wafer like piece from your skin. It pulls off, but it works best to pull off evenly and slowly. I then put the 2 pieced equipment into the ostomy trash bag. Then I fold up and put deep into the plastic grocery bag.

  • Step 5. Now you have a totally exposed stoma. It needs to be cleaned off carefully with a warm cloth. I use paper towel with warm water. wash off gently and thoroughly. Next you will want to dry the surface area around the stoma.

  • Step 6. I will now shave the area, very cleanly and very carefully not wanting to hit the stoma with the razor. Once this is completed, I will now wipe off again with a paper towel and warm water. This is to clean off the area again to prevent any infection.

  • Medline Wipe Protectant Skin Sureprep, 50 CountMedline Wipe Protectant Skin Sureprep, 50 CountSee Amazon Special PriceStep 7. To wrap up the process, you will need to treat the entire skin area around the stoma, the area that will be covered up with the wafer. After the tape protectors are removed then you will need to apply the wafer to be squarely covering the area over the ostomy. The last step in the steps is to securely snap the drain-able pouch over the wafer and snap it into place.

What’s Best About Colostomy Patient Care

The care provided for a colostomy patient is top notch. The doctors and the nurses are wonderful. They are well trained, polite and caring. The problem I found as I walked through the unknown jungle was that the do their job, but their job description is wanting for walking in the shoes of the patient.

What I am saying is that they send you from hoop to hoop to qualify you for getting the care they have decided is the care that you need to medically survive the medical situation you now find yourself a consumed part of. I was consumed with my new life.

How could I be anything but. It was all so new for me. I fought daily the feeling of accepting that I was a victim. You know the victim mentality that is so prevalent in the world today.

I refused to accept that role. There was something good about this. I kept looking and looking. It was there in front of me. This may be my handicap but I refuse to let it define me.

Everywhere I turned, no one seemed to have what I was looking for to try to pick my life up and move forward.

Colostomy maintenance to me wasn’t just the basics of survival, but it became, finding the right clothes that I could wear in my life, it was making it possible for myself to travel long distance car trips again, without the fear having an accident while travel.

I had to learn to put together a prep bag to have with me at all times.

Colostomy maintenance was also about getting my situation where I felt comfortable in public again, over coming my fear of others seeing and noticing how different I now was that most people.

I plan on covering these other areas on other posts. You see not one doctor helped with these areas at all. I hope I can help you out with some answers to the many questions that I had that I now have my answer for.

So in handling my daily and weekly maintance schedule, I have found three different products to be used all of the time.

The Bounty paper towels are mentioned in the above 7 step list of things to do.

The Medline Sureprep are the barrier prep cleansing and medicaiding strip cloths that I use in my ostomy pouch change over procedure.

And last but not least is my electric razor. I use an electric razor because my skin in this area is very sensitive. So why risk shaving with a hand razor blade and shaving creme.

This electric shaver works much better for me. It’s very effective in shaving close but with no irritation to my skin. 3 strong suggestions from me.
